doTERRA Wellness Advocate, Monica Barajas, believes that it is an honor to help people in need. Monica says she’s had an interest in helping people for as long as she can remember.
Although she stays busy by working full time, and as a wife, mother of three, and doTERRA Wellness Advocate, she cherishes opportunities to volunteer in her free time. Whether she is helping a friend with cancer or visiting someone in the hospital, she is constantly looking for ways to serve others. Currently, she volunteers with the High Desert Hospice Agency in Victorville, California.
Monica’s volunteer work mostly consists of providing companionship for hospice patients and their caretakers. She says, “I am motivated to volunteer because assisting seniors during a time of transition is a blessing.” One patient that Monica works with through the agency is recovering after suffering a heart attack and stroke. This patient is non-verbal and non-ambulatory and has remained in a vegetative state since her stroke. According to the American Heart Association, someone in the United States suffers a stroke about once every 40 seconds and strokes are a leading cause of disability.1
Along with her volunteer work at the High Desert Hospice Agency, Monica has other connections within her community due to her volunteer work over the years. Outside of her work at the agency, Monica volunteers to help community members who have asked for her assistance. She helps an elderly woman who suffers from trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes intense and chronic pain.2
Monica has also spent time helping an elderly friend who is suffering from colon cancer and is in need of a hip replacement. This cancer patient’s wife needs double knee replacements, so the couple greatly appreciates Monica’s help. Another patient that Monica visits is a seven year-old boy who is currently suffering with a brain tumor. She visits him in the hospital in hopes of bringing him relief and comfort.
Despite her busy schedule, Monica constantly finds ways to volunteer and give back to her community. Like many Wellness Advocates, she feels inspired to use her time and talents to help others. She says, “Throughout my life, I’ve enjoyed volunteering and helping people. I have been very blessed in my life, and I intend to continue paying it forward.”
